Types of Compression with Logic Pro X (Part 3)

Now, we’re going to the third part of learning and exploring the parameters, controls, tonal and dynamic differences, and uses for compressors and its different types.

Remembering that we are using Logic Pro X’s stock compressor plug-ins, since they’re free and offer a wide and didactic variety in types of compressors, so they’re good for beginners and contain a good usability.

So, without further ado, let’s dive in.

Studio FET:

This is where to tonal differences start to show up, the studio FET compressor is based on the historically and renowned compressor designed by Universal Audio’s legendary engineer Bill Putnam Senior, the 1176, a legendary compressor with a very unique sound and used by audio engineers since its creation

The 1176 is a 1 channel solid state compressor, marking the transition from tube compressors to the FET (Field Effect Transistor) technology, giving way to a more portable and easy construction, for not having the need of valves in its scheme.

The 1176 can be very punch and has a very fast attack, making it a suitable option for getting interesting sounds out of a drum bus, for an example, and this compressor also starts to add a bit a saturation, giving color and different tonal quality to its source material.

Classic VCA:

Again, going further on changing tonal quality and character with saturation, the Classic VCA is based on the dbx 160a, also a very popular, well known and very used compressor since the 1970’s, the Classic VCA is not a transparent compressor, being ideal for later uses in the mix such as adding tone and color to an instrument or a bus.

The only main difference in Logic’s interpretation of this compressor, is that the 160a used to be known for being versatile and having freedom of control, which is not the case in this plug-in, since the Classic VCA only has threshold, ratio, and output controls.

There are still more compressors to come, so stay tuned for the next episodes!
