Types of Compression with Logic Pro X (Part 2)

In the last post, we talked about how important the use of compression is, and its parameters and how it affects audio and its transients.

Using a compressor can be a very delicate process, but simple at the same time, you will get very different results every time, which can be satisfying or not. But is important to remember that when it comes to art, there are no rules if it sounds good or interesting, but there are certain specific ways to achieve specific results, and knowing this can save up a lot of time, ear fatigue, and headaches.

So, in the next post, we will go through the types of compressors, using Logic Pro.

Most DAWs come with stock plug-ins including EQ’s, compressors, and even reverb effects, but with very basic interfaces and not very intriguing sounds, Logic on the other hand comes with very different sounding stock plug-ins and very good interfaces, offering various types of compressors and their characteristics.

Platinum Digital:

The first of the order of compressors, the Platinum Digital is the closest it comes to a stock compressor by Logic, a digital, clean sounding and transparent sounding compressor, with a fast transient response, according to Logic.

This type of compression is generally good for “fixing” tracks before adding tone and color to them, controlling its dynamics and setting it in the right place, for these kinds of compressor are generally very clean, responsive and exact.

Studio VCA:

This next one is inspired by the Focusrite Red 3 Dual Compressor, a well-known and classic analogue hardware.

VCAs are known for having a very versatile sound and wide variety of controls, allowing you to set the attack and release very fast and very slow, and has all the controls to give you more freedom to manipulate the transients.

Stay tuned for the next posts and we'll keep going through the types of compression!
