The Walkman Back: Digital Audio Player

With the constant change of technology, a lot of formats for listening to music in the comfort of your house emerged through the years, from tapes, to vinyl, to CDs, and many other formats that have been created, experimented with, discontinued, and others sold well to the public.

And the major formats that made a huge appeal to the public, were the one with portable options, listening to high-quality music while in the streets, or at work, in a way that could fit right into your pocket. Between the portable formats, we’ve come a long way from the first ones up until now, the Walkman, the Discman, the MP3 player, the iPods, and nowadays, we do this with the convenience of out smartphones, just grab your phone, download Spotify, plug in your headphones, and you’re good to go.

This post will be more directed to what we call, the “audiophiles”, for the device that will be discussed in this post, may not have an appeal at first, not for the general public, but for people who enjoy seeking for the best quality equipment to listen to their music anywhere.

A DMP (Digital Media Player) nowadays will be very similar to a phone: A touch screen, an OS (Android on most of the cases), rechargeable battery, and so on.

But a DMP’s purpose is the priority on its hardware to offer the best sounding quality on its audio output: meet the Sony NW

The Sony NW is as mentioned, very similar to a phone, but having major differences on its hardware to prioritize the best audio quality for listening to your music.

We’re not going to get too technical on this post, but here are some of its features:

Faithful sound reproduction:

S-Master™ HX digital amp technology, independently developed for Walkman®, is compatible with the Native DSD format, and supports balanced and high-power output. It reduces distortion and noise across a wide range of frequencies, for rich and full-bodied sound, further enhanced by new high quality sound lead-free solder.

Crystal oscillators:

Two compact low-phase-noise crystal oscillators ensure precision clock stability at sampling rate multiples of 44.1kHz and 48kHz. The crystal electrode piece is formed with gold vapor deposition for enhanced electric characteristics and improved instrumental separation. This helps remove a veil and reduce noise to realize clear, open sound reproduction.

The Sony NW also comes with a very responsive graphic EQ built-in in its system, as well as AI tools and other things to enhance the listening experience.
