As discussed in the last post about the SSL 4000, SSL is one of the main brands and names when it comes to mixing consoles and recording and mixing hardware in general.
Although SSL is between the best of the best in terms of quality and fidelity, SSL classic consoles are a rare find nowadays, since many few were manufactured and these hardware's aged considerably, and when found, these can be extremely expensive finds.
That is where the plug-ins came to make our life a little easier when it comes to finding or having an approximated taste of what our own compositions and productions would sound going through these amazing pieces of hardware.
So, in this post, we will be looking at a few good options to try and emulate and get close to the core sound of these classic and emblematic mixing consoles.
Designed in association with and licensed by SSL itself, this plug-in is based on the SSL E-Series, a punchier, cleaner sound, with the classic layout of an SSL channel strip: Low and High-Pass filters, a four-band EQ, compressor with the fast-attack switch and noise gate with the same properties.
Based on the classic 4000E series, the EV2 Channel Strip offers again the classic SSL channel strip, with additional features and sound different from the first instance, using proprietary Precision Analog Component technology, SSL EV2 has been modeled component-by-component from a meticulously maintained reference console selected by SSL.
You can choose between the original, gritty SSL ‘O2’ Brown Knob EQ vs. the clean ‘242’ Black Knob EQ. SSL EV2 also adds the console’s richly saturated mic pre and line inputs. The result is a new level of analog depth and detail—an elevated take on the timeless SSL sound.
This time around, developed by SSL themselves, the Channel Strip two was made to be a variable and versatile channel strip, but maintaining the classic and modern properties two its sounds.
Channel Strip 2 emulates the SSL 9000K SuperAnalogue, large-format console, an evolution of the 4000E, once again offering the classic SSL Channel Strip layout, allowing you to switch between the E-series and G-series EQ profiles for added flexibility.
